Scroll air compressors use one fixed and one orbiting spiral element to compress air without sliding contact between compression surfaces. The result: oil-free air at the source, exceptionally low noise (typically 56–68 dB), low vibration, and minimal maintenance. Scroll is the dominant technology in medical, dental, laboratory, and electronics-fab settings where NFPA-99 medical-grade air or ISO 8573-1 Class 0 oil-free air is required without downstream oil-removal hardware. Modular design — multiple scroll air-ends in parallel — lets a system scale by adding heads instead of replacing the whole machine. Representative families: Atlas Copco SF, Anest Iwata SLP, Powerex SES/SLA, Hitachi DSP, Mitsui Seiki. Sweet spot is 5–20 HP; larger scroll systems are typically multi-head modular.
How it works
One fixed scroll + one orbiting scroll, both Archimedean spirals. The orbiting scroll moves in a small circular path (no rotation) while the fixed scroll holds still. Air pockets form at the outer edge, are progressively trapped and compressed as they spiral inward, and discharge at the center. Tip seals on the scroll edges are the only wear part; replacement interval is ~10,000 hours.
When to choose this type
Choose scroll when oil-free air is non-negotiable AND noise must stay below 70 dB at the unit AND HP demand is below ~30 HP. Above 30 HP, oil-free rotary screw is more economical. If oil-free is not required and noise is acceptable above 70 dB, reciprocating or screw will deliver more SCFM per dollar.
