Rotary vane air compressors use a single off-center rotor with sliding vanes inside a cylindrical stator to compress air with one continuous, low-vibration motion. They are a niche but technically distinct mechanical class: fewer moving parts than reciprocating, fewer precision-tolerance surfaces than screw, and inherently 100% duty rated because nothing reciprocates. Mattei (Italy) and Hydrovane / Pneumofore are the dominant Western brands; in industrial vacuum and gas-handling, Becker and Busch are common. Sweet spot is 5–75 HP shop or process air where a screw would be over-engineered and a piston cannot meet the duty cycle. Vanes wear over time and are replaceable as a service kit; otherwise the air-end is essentially maintenance-free for 100,000+ hours.
How it works
A single steel rotor with longitudinal slots holding sliding vanes spins inside a cylindrical stator that is offset from the rotor centerline. As the rotor turns, each vane is thrown outward by centrifugal force and lubricating oil pressure to maintain contact with the stator wall. Air enters at the side where the vane-to-wall gap is largest, gets carried around as the gap progressively shrinks, and discharges at the small-gap side. Oil is injected for sealing + cooling, then separated downstream and recirculated. Because the rotor turns at a single low speed (1500 rpm typical) and vanes seal by sliding contact rather than precise machining, the design is simple, quiet, and tolerant of partial-load operation.
When to choose this type
Choose rotary vane when 100% duty is required, screw is over-budget or over-engineered, and noise must stay sub-70 dB without enclosure work. Vane efficiency at full load is typically 5–10% behind a comparable VSD screw, so opex matters less than capex / simplicity / longevity for these buyers. If the application is intermittent and 50% duty is plenty, reciprocating still wins on capex.
