Marine starting-air compressors are purpose-built multi-stage piston compressors that fill 30-bar starting-air bottles for slow- and medium-speed marine diesel main engines and auxiliary engines. They are mechanically related to high-pressure breathing-air compressors but optimized for an entirely different duty: long-cycle once- or twice-daily fills of large bottle banks, salt-air corrosion resistance, and class-society approval (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, Class NK, BV). Sub-classes within the marine category include topping-up compressors, deck-service air, and hydraulic-system air for cargo handling. Representative families: Hatlapa W-series (Germany), Sperre HV/HL/HG (Norway), Tanabe (Japan), Sauer Compressors WP-series (Germany), J.P. Sauer & Sohn. Compatible with class-society inspection regimes and built to service intervals matched to dry-dock cycles.

How it works

Two- to four-stage water-cooled piston compressor with intercoolers and aftercooler. Cylinder block, head, and piston rings are specified for salt-air ambient and continuous condensate exposure. Forced-feed lubrication is standard; oil/water separation is integrated. Discharge passes through automatic condensate drains and a final filter to the receiver / starting-air bottle. Many units include a direct-driven priming pump and integrated cooling-water circulation for closed-loop operation in hot engine rooms.

When to choose this type

Choose marine-class equipment whenever the discharge supports a marine-engine starting system or any onboard pneumatic system on a class-rated vessel. A shop-air compressor will not pass class-society approval, will not survive salt-air ambient, and will not match the bottle-fill duty pattern. The right unit is sized to fill the largest starter bottle bank in the specified time at the worst-case ambient — IACS rules govern the math.

Who buys these

  • merchant shipping fleets (cargo, container, tanker, bulk)
  • naval and coast-guard vessels
  • offshore drilling rigs and FPSOs
  • shipyards (newbuild + retrofit)
  • ship management and class-society repair networks

Representative brands

Hatlapa · Sperre · Tanabe · Sauer Compressors · J.P. Sauer & Sohn · Bauer Marine · RIX Industries (SA series) · Tamrotor
