Centrifugal Air Compressors
Compressor type
150–6000+ HP100–500 PSI
Centrifugal air compressors use one or more high-speed (15,000–60,000 rpm) bladed impellers to accelerate air outward, then convert that velocity into pressure through a stationary diffuser. They are the dominant technology above ~250 HP in continuous-duty plant air, process air, and HVAC chiller service: oil-free at the air-stream by design, very high SCFM-per-footprint, and the lowest specific power consumption of any compressor class at full load. Two- and three-stage configurations with intercoolers reach 125–150 PSI; four-stage and integrally-geared designs reach 500+ PSI. Representative families: Cameron Centac, Ingersoll Rand Centac, Gardner Denver Centac, Atlas Copco ZH/ZS, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Sundyne. Capex is in the millions; opex savings vs screws over a 20-year service life are also in the millions.
How it works
Air enters the eye of a high-speed bladed impeller, which uses centrifugal force to accelerate the air radially outward. The high-velocity discharge passes through a stationary diffuser ring that converts kinetic energy into static pressure, then into a volute or scroll housing. Multi-stage designs route the air through an intercooler and into a second (smaller, higher-speed) impeller for further compression. Bearings are usually hydrodynamic or magnetic; lubrication is on the gearbox side only — the air path itself never contacts oil.
When to choose this type
Choose centrifugal when continuous demand exceeds ~1500 SCFM and the operation runs 7000+ hours per year. The capex is several multiples of an equivalent screw plant but opex (kW per 100 SCFM at full load) is the lowest of any class, and oil-free at the stream is guaranteed by the design. Below 250 HP, screw remains more economical. Application engineering is required — surge margin, intercooler sizing, and aftercooler load-matching are not casual decisions.
Who buys these

- steel mills and large-volume manufacturing
- wastewater treatment (aeration blowers — adjacent technology)
- centralized hospital / campus air systems above ~500 HP
- PET blow molding and industrial gas turbines
