High-pressure breathing air compressors are 3- or 4-stage piston machines purpose-built to fill SCBA, SCUBA, and industrial breathing-air cylinders to 3000–6000 PSI (200–414 bar). Each compression stage is intercooled and the discharge passes through a multi-stage filtration train — coalescing oil/water separator, activated carbon, molecular sieve — to deliver air meeting CGA Grade D (industrial) or Grade E (SCUBA / SCBA) purity. Continuous CO and CO₂ monitoring is required where the air supports human respiration; many units integrate this monitoring with auto-shutoff. Buyers are dive shops, fire departments, paintball parks, industrial safety departments, and military / first-responder fleets.
How it works
3- or 4-stage piston compressor with intercoolers between every stage and an aftercooler at the final discharge. Each stage progressively raises pressure (typical: 1→7→50→230→345 bar for a 4-stage). Final discharge passes through condensate drains and a filtration tower (oil/water coalescer → activated carbon → molecular sieve) before reaching the fill panel. Fill panels include condensate purge valves, fill pressure gauge, and (where required) CO/CO₂ analyzers with cylinder shutoff.
When to choose this type
Choose breathing-air-rated equipment whenever the discharge supports human respiration. Standard shop-air compressors must never be used for breathing air — oil carryover, CO from worn rings, and missing filtration are real fatalities. If filling SCBA cylinders, ensure the unit and filtration meet CGA Grade D (industrial) or Grade E (SCUBA, fire-service) and that CO/CO₂ monitoring is appropriate for the use case.
