Desiccant air dryer
Desiccant air dryers use a regenerable bed of adsorbent material to strip water vapor from compressed air, delivering pressure dew points well below the freezing range that refrigerated dryers cannot reach. Standard ratings are -40 deg F PDP, -70 deg F PDP, and -100 deg F PDP.
What it is
Wet compressed air passes through one of two desiccant towers. The active tower adsorbs moisture; the offline tower regenerates, either by purging with a portion of dry air (heatless), by adding heat (heated purge), or by blowing ambient with a blower (blower purge or zero-purge). Towers swap on a timer or on dew point demand. The purge penalty for heatless designs is typically 15 percent of rated flow.
Why it matters
Desiccant dryers are the only way to achieve sub-freezing pressure dew points reliably. Instrument air, lab air, pharmaceutical filling, and any compressed-air piping run outdoors in winter need desiccant-class drying. The cost is real: a heatless desiccant dryer can consume 15 percent of plant compressed-air capacity in purge, which is wasted compression energy.
How it is used in our catalog
Desiccant options appear in the dryer catalog, filterable by regeneration style (heatless, heated, blower, zero-purge) and target dew point. Pair desiccant dryers with high-efficiency VSD rotary screw compressors to mitigate the purge-air penalty.
Common questions
Which regeneration style is best?
Heatless: cheapest, highest operating cost. Heated: balanced. Blower/zero-purge: highest capital, lowest operating cost. The right choice depends on duty hours and energy cost.
How often does desiccant need to be changed?
Activated alumina lasts 3-5 years in clean service. Oil contamination from upstream coalescers shortens that to under a year, which is why pre-filtration matters.
